Bulldog BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) is an annual contest that exposes high school students to the concepts of engineering and technology. It’s a team effort of building and operating a remote-controlled machine.
Starting from a box of raw materials, teams of middle and high school students are given six weeks to design, build and then demonstrate a remote-controlled machine that will perform a given task. No other materials can be used.
The design and build process involves brainstoming and ingenuity. The contest fosters critical thinking, hands-on participation and teamwork.
The intent of the BEST program is to get kids motivated for studies and careers in engineering, science and technology and introduce them to some of the engineering/scientific methods through mentoring by industry professionals and actual hands-on experience. Real-world engineering is demonstrated while providing an exciting and fun sports-like competition. Winners advance to the South’s BEST regional competition held at Auburn University.
SCHE had one of 3 winning teams from the state of Mississippi in 2008 and were able to compete on a regional level at Auburn. If you are interested in being a part of the SCHE Robotics Team, contact Michael Lane — use the Contact Us form and we’ll pass it on.
